The life of faith can empower the Christian life! According to our reading today, it can enable us to do two things. It can quicken us to experience great victories, and it can enable us to survive great suffering. It is easy to focus on the first one and sort of ignore the second. As a matter of fact, some may declare that, if we have enough faith, we will never have to endure hard times for the sake of the Gospel. The truth is, the life of faith has times when we “put armies to flight” and it has times when we are tortured.
Did you know that we can bring glory to God by our suffering? The believer can give great testimony to God by enduring hard times with great faith, trusting in God, even though all is not well in our lives. I think of the line from the book of Job.
Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.”
(Job 1:9-11 ESV)
Satan claimed that the only reason Job loved God was because the Lord was blessing him so much. Take away his blessings, Satan declared, and Job will turn away from God in a second.
Well, Job proved Satan wrong, and we can too! When we cling to God in faith, even when things are going badly in life, we show that we love God, and not just His blessings. No one wants to see suffering come, but if it does, we can use this too to glorify our Lord.
